What is a vasectomy reversal?

A vasectomy reversal is a microsurgical procedure that reconnects the vas deferentia (the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles) that were blocked during your vasectomy. When successful, this allows sperm to re-enter the semen, making natural conception possible again.

At Premier Vasectomy, we perform vasovasostomy—a precise technique that reconnects the two cut ends of the vas deferentia. This is the most common type of reversal and is appropriate when sperm are present in the fluid at the time of surgery. If a more complex procedure such as a vasoepididymostomy is required, we will discuss referral options with you.

Vasovasostomy is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia and typically takes ~4 hours to complete.

Why Work with Dr.Purnell?

Restore Your Fertility & Expand Your Family

At Premier Vasectomy, we know that family planning decisions can change over time. If you’ve previously had a vasectomy but are now ready to grow your family, a vasectomy reversal can be a safe, effective solution. Our goal is to guide you through this process with compassion, medical expertise, and clear communication—so you feel informed and supported every step of the way.

  • Board-Certified Physician: Your procedure is performed by Dr. Stephanie Purnell, MD, MPH, a board-certified family physician specializing in men’s reproductive health.

  • Patient-Centered Care: Our clinic is discreet, professional, and focused on your comfort.

  • Transparent Pricing: Your $100 consultation fee is applied toward the procedure balance.

  • Personalized Approach: We tailor your treatment plan to your timeline, goals, and budget.

Who is a candidate for reversal?

You may be an excellent candidate for vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) if:

  • You are in good overall health.
  • You previously had a vasectomy but wish to have biological children.
  • Your partner is fertile or you are undergoing fertility treatment (IUI/IVF).
  • You prefer a natural conception option over sperm retrieval + IVF.

During your consultation, we’ll review your medical history, discuss your fertility goals, and perform a physical exam to ensure a vasectomy reversal is right for you.

How is Recovery?

Recovery and Results

Most patients return to light activity within 48 hours and can increase physical activity levels within one week. Full recovery and return to sexual activity are generally recommended after 4 weeks.

A semen analysis is typically performed around 4 weeks post-procedure to confirm the presence of sperm in the semen. Pregnancy rates vary depending on time since vasectomy, type of repair, and overall fertility factors including factors related to one's partner.

General Aftercare Instructions:

Activity: Rest for 24–48 hours. Avoid heavy lifting (>25lbs), strenuous exercise, and sexual activity for 2–3 weeks. Wear snug scrotal support (jockstrap or briefs) during the first 1–2 weeks to reduce swelling and discomfort.

Wound Care: Keep the area clean and dry. Return to clinic for drain removal in 24 hours. You may shower after 48 hours, but avoid soaking in baths, pools, or hot tubs for 4 weeks.

Pain & Swelling: Use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for discomfort, or prescription medication if provided. Apply ice packs to the scrotum for 15–20 minutes every hour (while awake) during the first 48 hours.

Medications: Take all prescribed medications as directed and complete the full course of any antibiotic.
