Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a simple, safe, and effective form of permanent birth control for those with male genitalia. This procedure causes sterility = the inability to produce offspring. Vasectomy is a gentle, office-based procedure that takes about 20 minutes to complete. Vasectomy works by blocking the tubes (vasa deferentia) that carry sperm from the testicles. This prevents sperm from entering the semen which thus prevents the ejaculate from causing pregnancy.

How much does a vasectomy cost? Does insurance cover this procedure?

Premier Vasectomy offers competitive pricing for the region - $845 for same day consultation and procedure. A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required at the time of scheduling for the procedure. The cost of the semen analysis (to confirm sterility) after the procedure varies but the lab we work with (The Bedford Lab) charges $50 for one test.

Premier Vasectomy does not accept health insurance currently. If you have health insurance, a claim can be submitted to your insurance company after the procedure for reimbursement but most insurance companies do not reimburse the full cost of the procedure.

What is recovery like after vasectomy?

Most men feel some soreness for a night or two after the procedure and then feel fine. We recommend wearing tight underpants or a jock strap for the first few days after the vasectomy to decrease your discomfort and chances of bleeding.

Avoid any vigorous activity, including sports and sex, for the first 3-7 days after your vasectomy.

Are vasectomies reversible?

Vasectomy is a permanent form of contraception and should be considered irreversible.  You should have a vasectomy only if you are 100% sure that for the remainder of your life you do not want to get someone pregnant.

If you are interested in reversing a vasectomy, please call the clinic 410-800-3280 for further information. If you don't want to have a vasectomy reversal, sperm can be taken from the testicle or the epididymis and used for in vitro fertilization. These procedures are costly and may not be covered by your health insurance. Also, they do not always work. If you think you may want to have children one day, you should look into non-permanent forms of birth control before deciding to have a vasectomy.

Does vasectomy prevent against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

No. Vasectomy will not protect you from sexually transmitted infections. Even if semen does not contain sperm, semen can still have and transmit infections. For some types of STIs, skin-to-skin contact is all you need to get an infection from a sexual partner.

Use condoms to reduce your chances of STI contraction.

Will I be comfortable with a female physician?

As family physicians, our vasectomy doctors have extensive experience with male patients. Our clinical expertise and communication styles allow us to put our patients at ease and to provide excellent care.

Your safety and comfort are our goals. Our male patients find our female doctors comfortable to talk with. We treat men with dignity and respect. We are extremely gentle with procedural care, and have the utmost respect for the privacy of our patients.

You are welcome to call for a consultation via telehealth with the doctor prior to scheduling a vasectomy.

What are the COVID-19 Policies in place?

  • If you have a fever, cough, difficulty breathing, other sick symptoms, or are on quarantine for exposure to COVID-19 please stay home.  We will reschedule.  Please contact your regular healthcare provider for what to do if sick.  Call 911 if seriously ill.
  • You may bring no more than one support person with you to your appointment.  Support persons must adhere to the same policies regarding masks, social distancing, and illness.
  • Policies are based on recommendations of the CDC and may change as we focus on serving our patients and doing what is best for public health.
